Greetings from London where we are having a good time at the MR Dev Summit 2019 networking and learning with passionate Mixed Reality experts.

I also delivered a session "Advanced Mixed Reality Development and Best Practices".
The presentation covered my Top 10 of HoloLens / Mixed Reality development best practices, including Deep Learning and WHY Azure Spatial Anchors are a transformational technology and HOW to develop applications.
I also had a live demo for a spatial-persisted sticky notes AR app with native versions for Android ARCore and iOS ARKit. The code is available on GitHub and I walked attendees through the architecture and the technology under the hood.
Greetings from Seattle where we had a blast delivering our breakout session at Microsoft's largest developer conference Build 2019.
The title of our talk was "Developing Mobile Augmented Reality (AR) Applications with Azure Spatial Anchors".

This was my 5th time in a row speaking at Build as an external, non-Microsoft speaker. What an honor.
This time I was co-presenting with Paris Morgan from the Azure Spatial Anchors team. An even bigger honor.

The presentation covered WHY Azure Spatial Anchors are a transformational technology, what a Spatial Anchor is and why mobile AR is very much relevant even when we have advanced head-mounted devices like the HoloLens 2. I also showed lots of examples and use cases for enterprise and consumer scenarios. Then Paris explained HOW to develop these applications yourself. We also had a live demo for a spatial-persisted sticky notes AR app with native versions for Android ARCore and iOS ARKit. The code is available on GitHub and we walked attendees through the architecture and the technology under the hood. Paris also covered UX best practices including how to best place anchors and we were able to answer a couple of questions.

The demo source code is available here on GitHub.
You can watch the session recording here or embedded below.
There seems to have been a glitch with the recording around 21:50 minutes where the production crew had to cut out 1 minute of content. :-( I will post the MR Dev Days video once it is out which hopefully does not have such a recording/processing issue.
It was 2009 when I started my first open source project and announced it with this unspectacular blog post. Back then it was developed with Visual Studio 2008 targeting Silverlight and hosted on CodePlex.
Many things have changed and tech comes and goes but during the last 10 years I always adapted, extended it, added bug fixes and reviewed/merged Pull Requests. Even after all the years WriteableBitmapEx is still quite popular, especially with Windows desktop WPF developers.

Version 1.6.2 of WriteableBitmapEx finally adds dedicated libs for UWP and an UWP sample. For WPF it now supports .NET Core, both the .NET Framework and .NET Core libs are part of the NuGet pack.

If you are using the source code and the VS solution directly, you can choose the .NET Framework 4.5 or .NET Core 3 as the target in the VS drop-down.

WriteableBitmapEx supports a variety of Windows platforms and versions.
WPF and Windows 10 Universal Windows Platform (UWP) are actively maintained.
Silverlight, Windows 8/8.1 WinRT, Windows Phone WinRT and Silverlight 7/8/8.1 are not maintained anymore but the latest stable libs are still part of the NuGet package.

You can download the latest via the updated NuGet package. The packages contain the WriteableBitmapEx binaries. All samples and the source code can be found in the GitHub repository.

A huge shout out and thank you to all the contributors, bug issuers and users of the library. ❤Rene Schultehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12777157871967896549noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-563071785757928434.post-74809171325067383082018-12-03T10:05:00.002+01:002018-12-10T10:45:47.474+01:00Content for the DevTernity Session - Advanced Mixed Reality Development and Best Practices

DevTernity in beautiful Riga, Latvia was a great conference and I had good fun delivering my session called "Advanced Mixed Reality Development and Best Practices".

The presentation covered best practices we learned while developing for the HoloLens since 2015 and my Top 10 HoloLens Developer Recommendations 2018. I also talked and demoed exciting new things with MR + AI showcasing near real-time object recognition running on the HoloLens and leveraging WinML for on-device Deep Learning inference. You can see a video of the demo embedded at the bottom of this post. I also showed how the new RS5 Windows 10 update brings hardware-accelerated inference to the HoloLens via DirextX 12 drivers.

The slide deck can be downloaded here. It's quite large with embedded videos and I recommend to download it.
The WinML object recognition demo source code targeting RS5 APIs is here.
The European Space Agency ESA invited me a while ago to give a keynote for the Visualisation and Science Communication track at the first ever Φ-week conference. I also was the chair for the track and made sure speakers were on time, managed questions, etc. Plus I gave another session at the VR/AR workshop and helped with the closing panel discussion that proposed advises how the ESA could leverage VR/AR in an earth observation context.

I felt really honored the ESA invited me to keynote their first event and I had a great time at the ESA ESRIN facility in beautiful Frascati which is near Rome, Italy.
The ESRIN is planning another Φ-week conference for 2019, so keep an eye out in case you want to go there as well.

My keynote "Beam me up, Scotty! Teleporting people and objects via 3D holographic livestreaming." showed how Immersive Telepresence and holographic 3D communication will play an important role for space travel and colonization. Of coursed it included our HoloBeam technology and how it is making science-fiction a reality, enabling those use cases. I also showed some AI Deep Learning research we are running for various, related scenarios and gave an outlook for future holographic projection research.
My other talk was titled "Look, holograms! A short introduction to Mixed Reality and HoloLens." and was exactly that. I also performed live demos of some of our HoloLens apps.

The ESA ESRIN also had two sketch artists on-site who created a funny, little summary of the Visualisation and Science Communication track that I chaired and gave the keynote for.
I had a good time at the Digility conference in Cologne delivering my session "Advanced Mixed Reality Development and Best Practices".

The Unite Berlin AutoTech Summit was amazing and I had a great time delivering my session at Unity's largest conference in Europe.

The title of my talk was "Industrial Mixed Reality – Lessons learned developing for Microsoft HoloLens".

The presentation covered best practices we learned while developing for the HoloLens since 2015 and my Top 10 HoloLens Developer Recommendations 2018. I also talked and demoed exciting new things to come with MR + AI showcasing near real-time object recognition running on the HoloLens and leveraging WinML for on-device Deep Learning inference. You can see a video of the demo embedded at the bottom of this post. This is a brand new demo video fitted more for an industrial and automotive context recognizing car parts and tools.
Build 2018 is a wrap! I had a blast delivering my breakout session at Microsoft's largest developer conference in Seattle.

The title of my talk was "Seizing the Mixed Reality Revolution – A past, present and future Mixed Reality Partner perspective".
I was told I was the only external, non-Microsoft speaker with a full 45 minute breakout session. What an honor.

The presentation covered best practices <span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">we learned while developing for the HoloLens since 2015 and my Top 10 HoloLens Developer Recommendations 2018. You can see a video of the demo embedded at the bottom of this post.

A funny anecdote: an attendee was wearing the HoloLens during my talk. I saw the white LED was turned on, so I assumed he was recording my session with the HoloLens. I asked him afterwards what he was doing and he was in-fact live streaming my session to his colleague on the east coast using the new Remote Assist app.

Today, I got an exciting email from Microsoft inviting me into the Microsoft Regional Director program. Needless to say I accepted the invitation. It's a huge honor to join this small group of outstanding experts.

I would like to thank Microsoft, the community and especially all that nominated me for RD.

It was almost exactly 8 years ago when I got the first MVP award and my blog post started with the same words (I only fixed the bug with exiting/exciting :-). Back then I got the Silverlight MVP Award and I moved over to the Windows Phone Development MVPs shortly after doing so much Windows Phone dev. The Win Phone Dev MVPs joined forces with the Client App Dev and Emerging Experiences MVPs a while ago and formed the Windows Development MVP category.

Now, I'm honored to be a Microsoft Windows Development MVP and also a Regional Director.

If you don't know what a Regional Director is, RD website describes the role pretty well:

The Regional Director Program provides Microsoft leaders with the customer insights and real-world voices it needs to continue empowering developers and IT professionals with the world's most innovative and impactful tools, services, and solutions.

Established in 1993, the program consists of 150 of the world's top technology visionaries chosen specifically for their proven cross-platform expertise, community leadership, and commitment to business results. You will typically find Regional Directors keynoting at top industry events, leading community groups and local initiatives, running technology-focused companies, or consulting on and implementing the latest breakthrough within a multinational corporation.

There's also a nice FAQ with more information.

I wanted to write this post since a while but have been putting it off due to other priorities but with the recent whistle-blowing about Cambridge Analytica and also my MVP friend James Ashley starting an AI Ethics blogging initiative, it's about time.

I would say I'm fairly knowledgeable in the AI field staying up-to-date with the research field and currently exploring WinML in Mixed Reality. I also developed my own Deep Learning engine aka Deep Neural Network (DNN) from scratch 15 years ago and applied for OCR. It was just a simple Multi-Layer Perceptron but hey we used a Genetic training algorithm which also seems to have a renaissance in the Deep Learning field as Deep Neuroevolution.

If you are familiar with Deep Learning skip this paragraph but if not: A DNN is simply put simulating the human brain with neurons connected with synapses. Artificial neural networks are basically lots of matrix computations where the trained data is stored as synapse weight vectors and tuned via lots of parameters like neuron activations functions, network structure, etc.
Those networks are trained via different ways but most common these days is supervised learning where lots of big data training sets are run through the DNN, a desired output is compared with the actual output and the error is then backpropagated until the actual output is sufficient. Once the DNN is trained it enters the inference phase where it is provided with unknown data sets and if it's trained correctly it will generalize and provide the right output on unknown inputs.
The basic techniques are quite old and were gathering dust but since a few years there is this renaissance when lots of training data became available, huge computing power in form of powerful GPUs and new specialized accelerators, plus AI researchers discovered GitHub and open source.

AI researchers, the question has to be: Should we do it, not can we do it.

We live in the era of Neural Networks AI and it only has just begun. Current AI systems are very specific and targeted at certain tasks but Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is becoming more and more interesting with advances in Reinforcement Learning (RL) like Google's DeepMind AlphaGo challenge.

RL is just in its infancy but already quite scary if you look at some research from game development innovators like SEED literally using military training camp simulations to train self-learning agents.

They also applied it to Battlefield 1. There are a couple of things to improve but nevertheless impressive results were achieved which are at beyond AlphaGo.
Does everyone see an army of AI in this video or is it just me?

I'm sure the involved developers don't have bad goals in mind and I can see it being nicely suited for computer games AI but it's not just the age of Deep Learning but also real-time ray tracing is moving forward, so why not render photorealistic scenes and use that as input for your RL agent training which is then deployed to a real-world war machine. With the photorealistic quality of ray tracing endless real-world-like scenes can be synthesized solving the problem of getting enough training data.
Below is another video showing real-time ray tracing and self-learning agents. The video looks cute and all fun but think about if you replace the assets with a different scene.
Don't get me wrong it's super impressive and I'm all in for advancements in tech but we have to think about the implications in a broader context.

Oh wait, there's actually already a photorealistic simulation framework available to train autonomous drones and other vehicles, they just need to add real-time ray tracing now but I guess it's already in the works. I was getting a little worried but good that drones are only used in civilian scenarios.

Now look at the recent Boston Dynamics robots like Atlas or the SpotMini robot dog which inspired Black Mirror for a good reason.

But hey isn't it cute how Jeff Bezos is just taking his robot dog out for a walk?

We don't even have to look at the future of RL and AGI and scary robots with the fear of the singularity, we already have quite amazing achievements especially with LSTM and CNN type neural networks. Some of them outperform humans already. LSTMs are used for time-based information like speech recognition and synthesis and CNNs for computer vision tasks.

The author of xkcd shares the same concerns

The interesting and scary part is that artificial neural networks are almost a black box after being trained and can make implications the developer is not aware of. There's always that uncertainty with DNNs, at least for now and it can have huge implications for racial, gender and religious profiling even if that was not the intend of the developer/researcher.

AI researchers, wake up.

Think twice before working on the next cool thing that raises your reputation in the research community. There's more to it than your research and work silo. It's the whole humanity. You have great power and with that comes even greater responsibility.
Ask yourself constantly: What are the implications? Should we do it?

Let's look at some more amazing examples and their implications

I could post tons of recent examples which are super cool if you wear the geek hat but which are super scary if you put on the ethics hat on and think a bit about their implications.

Autonomous vehicles are the future and I'm sure lots of us can't wait until we can relax during a long drive in our self-driving car but it might not be ready yet for tests out in the wild like Uber's deadly accident shows. No doubt that human drivers are worse even today but the perception is that AI is much better and it should be indeed. My guess is there's likely not enough training data available for all the edge cases yet since the object movement detection should have triggered a full stop but it might have been interpreted as a moving light shadow but the radar sensor should get it. We will see what the investigations find out but I still think it's too early for these kind of real-world tests.

NVIDIA has some amazing research ongoing with unsupervised mage-to-image translation. Just watch this demo video below and then think about if we can be sure if dashcam footage was really recorded during day or night.

Google's WaveNet and even more so Baidu's DeepVoice show impressive results for speech synthesis using samples of humans and then synthesizing their voice patterns. The amount of sample data needed to fake a person's voice is getting less and less, so not just public figures with lots of open samples but basically everyone can be imitated using text-to-speech.

It doesn't stop with audio synthesis. Researches from University of Washington made great progress with video synthesis. Play the embedded video and think about the implications this tech could have being in the wrong hands.

You might have heard about Deep Fakes videos being mainly used to generate fake celebrity porn but even worse things like this were created.

Well and of course video surveillance is getting a huge boosts since a couple of years due to great progress in face and object tracking Deep Learning AI. BBC tested a system in a Chinese city which is fully covered with AI-enabled CCTV cameras and it did not disappoint.
Make your own conclusion if it's a good or a scary thing that everyone is always tracked.

There's light!

It's not all just dark, there are of course as many good examples available that leverage modern AI for a good cause with little dark implications.

Impressive results were achieved for AI lipreading that beats professional, human lip readers which can help many people to live a better life.

Also huge advances are achieved in the medical field and especially in the computer vision tasks to automatically analyze radiology images like breast cancer mammography or improving noisy MRI data.

Also prominent companies like Google's DeepMind are beginning to realize the implications for humanity of their work and have started ethical initiatives.

And then there's Facebook!

It's crazy how ethical questions play a little role for large companies like Facebook which is hoarding billions of data sets from around the world which can be used for training. We even provide them not just the input data sets but even the training output with our likes, clicks but even just the scrolling behavior when you read. Plus the huge investments in Facebook's AI Research group hiring and growing some of the best AI talent in the industry.
Just look at some of the research areas of FB like DeepText which is super impressive and aims for "Better understanding people's interest". Now ask yourself for what? Ads? What kind of ads? What is an ad? Is a behavioral changing FB feed an ad?
And then you have companies like Cambridge Analytica who crawled/acquired the data and abuse it to sell their information warfare mercenary services to anyone changing human behavior and altering elections.
Real-world war machines might not be needed anymore, Big data + Deep Learning + Behavioral Psychology is a dangerous weapon if not the most dangerous.

It's good to see Mark Zuckerberg apologizing for the issues and we can only hope it will have real consequences and is actually still controllable at all.

And then there's YOU!

It's should not just be the Elon Musk's of the world warning about the impact of unethical AI, we as developers and researchers being at the forefront of technology have a responsibility too and need to speak up. It's about time, so please think about it and share your thoughts and raise your concerns.

The creator of Keras, a popular Deep Learning framework, a real expert shared his thoughts about Facebook and the implications of its massive AI research investments.
I couldn't agree more so let me finish this post here with his must-read Twitter thread:

The problem with Facebook is not *just* the loss of your privacy and the fact that it can be used as a totalitarian panopticon. The more worrying issue, in my opinion, is its use of digital information consumption as a psychological control vector. Time for a thread

— François Chollet (@fchollet) March 21, 2018

Make sure to read the whole thread here.
There's a little twist to it since François works for Google but I expect he sticks to his own principles.

AI researchers, wake up! Say NO to unethical AI!
Just a few hours ago I finished my presentation at Øredev in Malmö. I really enjoyed the conference and the city with nice people, great vibes and very good talks.

The title of my talk was "HoloLens 301: Advanced Mixed Reality Development and Best Practices" and it covered advanced Mixed Reality / HoloLens development topics, including a live demo, best practices and lessons we learned developing for the HoloLens since 2015. The room was full and I received positive feedback.

Last week I had the pleasure to give a talk at AWE Europe and was also able to attend it with nearly 1,500 other attendees, 100+ speakers and 90+ exhibitors.
AWE was a great conference and allowed me to connect with old and new contacts but also to experience lots of new hardware, software and attend some very good sessions.

This blog post gives a little recap of the event and the things I experienced using photos I've taken. It starts with the keynotes, after that it highlights a few great sessions and finally covers a collection of new devices and experiences I've seen at the expo. Make sure to read till the end and check out the great summary at the Valorem blog.
The content for my talk can be found here<span style="background-color: transparent; color: black; display: inline; float: none; font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px;">.

AWE was kicked off with a keynote by Ori Inbar who was sporting a jacket with illuminated AWE letters. Definitely a fun way to start a conference!
All sessions were recorded and will be posted on the AWE YouTube channel.

Allessandro Terenzi from AR-media presented a great overview about the history of AR tracking starting with markers and the current state of the art object tracking with feature-maps and model-based approaches.
One of my favorite talks was given by Khaled Sarayeddine from optinvent. He broke down the optics used for different, state of the art AR see-through devices. I have never heard such a comprehensive overview of AR see-through tech in such a detailed way.
Gartner presented their Top 5 Predictions about Digital Transformation which were insightful as usual. Gartner is estimating by 2020 more than 100 million consumers will shop in AR and that mobile AR (which I call Classic AR) will be dominant at least till the end of 2018.
Smart Glasses

Classic AR will drive the mass adoption for a while but there's little doubt that HMDs are the real Future AR. I was able to try a few new smart glasses which are available on the market.

Disclaimer: This post is no review and just a subjective write-down of my experience. Keep in mind, every device is on the market for a reason and fulfilling a certain demand.

Smart Glasses without Tracking
These devices show a screen in front of one or both eyes but don't track the environment, so the overlays are non-spatially integrated. The form factor is very lightweight.
Some of those devices use different light guide optics (Optinvent, Epson, Google Glass) or just a simple, small display like the Vuzix which is on the other hand highly modular and configurable.

The prototype from Fraunhofer FEP in Dresden is using beam splitting similar to the Meta 2 display tech. The Fraunhofer prototype is super low-power and the screens act as a camera at the same time performing eye tracking, so I was able to scroll the UI with my eye movement.

Smart Glasses with Tracking

The ODG R-9 provides a wide field of view and the new DAQRI Smart Glasses also had a decent FoV. The DAQRI Smart Glasses use a nice form factor running the computing unit in an external box that can be clipped to the belt. The rendering quality was great with the DAQRI as well.

Both device's inside-out tracking capabilities still lack quite behind the HoloLens which is no surprise considering the HoloLens has a dedicated HPU and went through intense calibration.

The German startup Holo-Light showed a prototype of a pen they are developing called Holo-Stylus which is supposed to provide 3D pen input. The device leverages optical infrared tracking using an IR camera bar mounted on top of the HoloLens. The prototype was using Wi-Fi to connect with the HoloLens but the final product is supposed to work via Bluetooth.

It's an interesting concept and I'm curious to try it out once it's more mature and works flawlessly.

Last week I gave a presentation at the Augmented World Expo Europe in Munich. I really enjoyed the conference with nice people, good vibes, great content and interesting new devices. You can read a recap of the conference and my impressions here.

The title of my talk was "Massive Mixed Reality - Leveraging large 3D models with mobile XR" and it covered different strategies for leveraging existing, large 3D models for rendering on a mobile devices like the HoloLens. The room was packed and I received very positive feedback.

The slide deck can be viewed and downloaded here but the main content is in the session itself.
The session was recorded and the video is up on AWE's YouTube channel and embedded below.
Google released a preview of its Augmented Reality platform ARCore. In this post I provide some thoughts and resources about how it compares to the competition. My earlier post is more about Getting Started.

I'm into 3D and AR development before it was cool and even did an ARToolkit port for Silverlight back in the days. Of course I also had to give ARCore a try.

The release of ARCore was nothing less than an answer to Apple's ARKit, although most of the ARCore algorithms originate from Google's Tango which is being worked on since years. Both provide a similar feature set with motion tracking, horizontal plane detection and ambient light estimation.
I don't own an Apple development environment so I can't compare it directly to ARKit but I tried out some of the experiments myself on a colleague's iPhone a few weeks ago. ARKit's tracking was really stable and I think ARCore is a bit behind but it's hard to say how it compares now without having my own side-by-side comparison. This video though seems to confirm this observation and it's not surprising considering Apple owns the whole stack and can calibrate their sensors and align the software much better. The next generation of their mobile devices will surely even more improve it and Apple can move a bit faster here but will users care about those slight tracking differences? I doubt it.
There's a great in-depth article comparing Apple's ARKit and Google's ARCore which also covers the tech under the hood: How is ARCore better than ARKit.

Wikitude and Vuforia are two larger third party libraries that provide SLAM-based marker-less tracking for many platforms since quite a while and much before ARKit / ARCore were out. I'm sure they will continue to innovate ahead but I fear both will be become less and less relevant since the licensing cost and third party SDK integration is always a big disadvantage. Even more important can Google and Apple really influence the hardware manufactures and improve the calibration to reduce the tracking errors to its minimum.

I'm a HoloLens developer since day one and actually already before it was publicly available, so I could compare it to Microsoft HoloLens but ARCore/ARKit play in a different league and actually complement each other.
The Microsoft HoloLens is a revolutionary device that might be a bit ahead of its time. The HoloLens shows us how mobile devices will work in the future. The inside-out tracking running on a custom chip is still leading and unseen in any other untethered, mobile device and the NUI input is top notch with voice and gesture input. The stereoscopic 3D see-through displays of an HMD provide a much more immersive UX seeing the world around you with your own eyes than holding up your phone/tablet in an unnatural way to see the world though a monoscopic 2D camera lens on a mobile phone screen.
ARCore/ARKit are taking a different approach and bring AR to the masses on existing hardware and there's a place for all 3. I can easily imagine building cross-platform solutions which target high-end experiences with the HoloLens for a smaller enterprise audience and a counterpart app with Google ARCore / Apple ARKit for the masses. Another benefit of classic mobile AR like ARCore/ARKit is the outdoor support and having easy access to GPS location data which I leveraged in this demo.

The news about HoloLens v2 with the new HPU / AI chip are exciting as it will open amazing use cases. Microsoft is definitely leading the industry with innovation in the AR/MR space and no competitor comes close to its bleeding edge technology. HMDs like the HoloLens are the future of mobile AR/MR but until HMDs will be become cheaper and in forms factors everyone can enjoy, ARCore and ARKit are great additions to the AR/MR landscape providing AR on current gen mobile hardware driving mass adoption and helping to mature the product design challenges.

It's a great time to be a 3D developer!
Google recently released a preview of its Augmented Reality platform called ARCore which is based on the amazing R&D that went into Google Tango.

This post provides a collection of useful information I came across and links to the sources of my own ARCore demos.

Google provides a few options for ARCore development depending on what your favorite development environment is: JAVA, Unreal, Web or Unity3D.
There's even a Xamarin port of the JAVA sample available made by my fellow MVP Morten.
The Getting Started with Unity is a great How To I successfully followed.

You can find some videos of my experiments with Google ARCode on my YouTube channel, like the one in the GIF above where I combined Unity Rigid Body physics and added a MeshCollider to ARCore's detected horizontal planes and also used ARCore's ambient light estimation feature.

The source code for my Unity3D ARCore experiments is published on GitHub: ARCoreExperiments.

I own a Samsung Galaxy S8 which is fortunately one of the supported Android devices. If you don't own one of those devices you might still be lucky using this hack.

Google also hosts a nice collection of AR Experiments some of them even include source code.
One of them is Portal Painter by Jane Friedhoff. She also wrote a great blog post how it was built.

Have fun and build some cool stuff!

Two weeks ago, my team and I were at Microsoft’s largest developer conference //build 2017, where we talked about Mixed Reality and unveiled our new HoloLens app called Tire Explorer.
I wrote a post for the Valorem blog which provides more technical details about the aquarium booth we had and the 3 main key features of the app. You can read it here.
Below is a video of the experience.

Beginning of this week I gave my new presentation at the Vision VR/AR Summit in Hollywood, California. I really enjoyed the conference with nice people, good vibes, great content and interesting new devices.

The title of my talk is "Massive Mixed Reality - Leveraging large 3D models with mobile XR" and it covers different strategies for leveraging existing, large 3D models for rendering on a mobile XR device (VR/AR/MR) like the HoloLens. I also showed a live demo of one model reduction tool and also Holographic Remoting in action. The feedback I got was very positive.

The slide deck can be viewed and downloaded here but the main content is in the session itself.
The session was recorded and the video is up on Unity's YouTube channel and embedded below.
Even after all the years WriteableBitmapEx is still quite popular, especially with WPF developers and I always incorporate bug fixes and also accept Pull Requests if I get some time.
Many contributions were integrated and lots of bugs fixed. Among those are some nice additions like a clipped line drawing or a dotted line renderer.

WriteableBitmapEx supports a variety of Windows platforms and versions: WPF, Silverlight, Windows 10 Universal Windows Platform (UWP), Windows 8/8.1, Windows Phone WinRT and Silverlight 7/8/8.1.

You can download the latest via the updated NuGet package. The packages contain the WriteableBitmapEx binaries. All samples and the source code can be found in the GitHub repository.

A big thank you to all the contributors, bug reporters and users of the library who help with feedback.Rene Schultehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12777157871967896549noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-563071785757928434.post-22199372347119131652016-11-07T23:55:00.001+01:002018-12-03T16:25:31.380+01:00#HoloTouringUS Stop 2 - Content for the VRDC 2016 HoloLens Presentation

My talk will cover how to develop Mixed Reality apps for the HoloLens using Unity. I will cover what VR, AR and MR mean, what makes the HoloLens unique and of course share best practices from more than a year doing HoloLens development. And we will have a nice live development session.
Most of the content and the demo is brand new and has a nice local context since Unite LA will be in Hollywood. Even if you have seen my Unite Europe talk already, there will be lots of new stuff.

The best part: My talk will be joined by two developers from Unity itself who are working on the Unity HoloLens APIs and are sharing some insights and best practice in our session.
Unity 5.5 and the HoloLens premiere a new feature to develop directly with a HoloLens device.
This so called Holographic Remoting will save a lot of development / deployment time. Once the connection is established, you can just press the Play button in the Unity Editor and it will run on the HoloLens device instantly.
The tooling and also Unity 5.5 is a bit unstable right now and the Remoting does not reliably work, but it is an early beta.
I’m confident this will be much better in a few weeks.
Very exciting!

I made a video showing how to set all up and how it works in action:
